GUI Prototyping Sandbox in C and Python
Sandbox that compares desktop GUI code in C with GTK and in Python with Tkinter.
2 min read
A cross-language exploratory sandbox for building graphical desktop user interfaces in C and Python.
Description
This repository contains reference code, experimental prototypes, and architectural patterns for creating desktop graphical user interfaces. It contrasts low-level imperative event-loop window management in C (main.c) with rapid declarative widget layouts and event binding in Python (gui.py).
Key Features
- Low-Level Windowing (
main.c): Understanding native window handles, OS message pumps, event queues, and rendering callbacks. - Rapid Python Prototyping (
gui.py): Event-driven programming using Tkinter/PyQt, layout management (Grid, Pack, Place), responsive window resizing, input controls, and dialog boxes. - Architecture Comparison: Exploring runtime performance versus developer productivity between compiled C windowing and interpreted Python GUI frameworks.

Requirements
- For Python: Python 3.8+ with
tkinterinstalled (python3-tkon Linux) - For C: GCC or Clang, plus GTK development headers (
libgtk-3-dev) or Windows SDK if targeting Win32
Installation & Setup
Clone the repository:
git clone https://github.com/ADM1SH/GUI-Development.git
cd GUI-Development
Usage
Run the Python GUI prototype:
python3 gui.py
Compile and run the C windowing application:
clang -Wall -Wextra -O2 -o gui_c main.c
./gui_c
